An overview of the planets and the solar system

The giant planets have diameters greater than km. The heliosphere and planetary magnetic fields for those planets that have them partially shield the Solar System from high-energy interstellar particles called cosmic rays.

Lessons 8 and 9 are lessons about Orreries, lessons 10 and 11 cover solar eclipses, lessons 12 and 13 are about the moon, lesson 14 discusses the other planets in the Solar System, and the last 4 lessons; are about stars and constellations.

Solar System Planets: Order of the 8 (or 9) Planets

The giant planets are sometimes also referred to as gas giants. Some of the worlds have never even been photographed up close. Most Kuiper Belt Objects, or KBOs, have not yet been seen by astronomers, and it is expected that there are a large number, perhaps greater than 40 or 50, whose size is comparable or greater than that of Pluto.

Solar System

The planets are very close to the ecliptic, whereas comets and Kuiper belt objects are frequently at significantly greater angles to it. The so-called "Planet Nine," as scientists are calling it, is about 10 times the mass of Earth and 5, times the mass of Pluto.

The Sun, planets, dwarf planets and moons are at scale for their relative sizes, not for distances. The giant planets have diameters greater than km. At this time, the core of the Sun will contract with hydrogen fusion occurring along a shell surrounding the inert helium, and the energy output will be much greater than at present.

This large size difference is responsible for many other differences between the two groups, for instance Jupiter and Saturn both have sufficiently high internal pressures to 'squeeze' large quantities of Hydrogen into a metallic state in their cores, whilst Uranus and Neptune can produce only a tiny fraction of this amount.

They are composed largely of refractory minerals, such as the silicates—which form their crusts and mantles —and metals, such as iron and nickel, which form their cores. These are asteroids, comets and a newly-detected group called Kuiper Belt objects. In the outer Solar System, the planets recieve much less light and heat from the Sun, as they are much further away, and the Solar radiation travelling outwards behaves according to an inverse square law.
